Thoughts for Today 5-20

May 20th, 2009

I received the new proofs for our updated brchure today. I’m really excited and I posted the cover proof on our twitter and facebook pages.

I was reading the on-line edition of the journal and there is a great opinon piece citing why the government shouldn’t be running businesses. It seems obvious to me, but nonetheless the writer points out mulitple cases where the government has either made a poor decision to intervene in private markets or try and compete the with the private market. Here it is: WSJ Article.

Also, we recieved a shipment of steel today from a supplier and the weight on the packing slip is way off from the actual weight of the shipment. Now we have to duel over theoretical weights which is industry standard vs. actual weights. Normally the shipment is a little more or a little less, but most likely withing a thousands pounds or so. Today’s shipment is over 7k lbs different on the lighter side than what the invoice states. This is frustrating not only it seems like they are trying to take advantage of me but it is complete waste of time becasuse it takes away from trying to improve our business…

This spiral stair was installed in a home in Beverly, NJ. The homeowner chose a spiral from our Forged Iron collection of spirals. The homeowner wrote ecstatic comments about not only the stair, but her salesman Joe Miller as well, “Joe Miller was most helpful in designing the staircase to meet our needs.” Additionally, she goes on to discuss her graciousness for how well the stair was built and assembled, “The staircase is beautiful - I loved the Forged Iron. Everything fit perfectly!”  Judging from the pictures I can see why she was happy from custom shoe molding on the round enclousure upstairs to the beautiful wooden posts and powder coated stair and balusters.
Here are some of the other particulars of this stair:
  • 5′ Code Spiral with 30 Degree Treads
  • 13 Treads and 14 Risers
  • Continuous Sleeve Option (Hides center column, hardware, etc and makes assembly a snap – call and ask why you want a continuous sleeve stair)
  • 3 Forged Iron Center Balusters per Tread – Group 1 at Salter’s
  • Custom 60 Degree platform to fit in round opening
  • Oak Treads, Platform, Handrail, and Capping (Stained by customer to match home)
  • Powder Coated Steel a beautiful Matte Black
  • 2 Wooden Corner Posts and matching shoe molding

This image is of the upper opening of the Spiral. As you can see we created a custom curved platform to match the opening. We also provided the shoe molding to the exact size of the opening so everything fits perfectly

In this picture you can see the customer put on a beautiful custom counter top attached to the spiral (The flowers are on it.) Additionally, you a have a wonderful view of the shape of the treads. This shows how a spiral can really be beautiful as well as practical from a space point of view in a home.

This picture is from the top of the stair looking down. You can really start to appreciate the custom woodwork we do at Salter. We take highest quality wood and hand craft each of these wood pieces to fit perfectly on your stair. A wonderful accessory for any spiral.

I am in the market for a spiral staircase from my deck to the lower level of my backyard. I am wondering how long after I place the order will the spiral be delivered?

Lisa,

You’ve come to the right place, we specialize in outdoor spiral stairs

As far as lead times go it all depends on what type of stair you would like. We can ship basic orders the same day, but custom orders can take around 4 weeks. If you give us a call Monday morning we can discuss the best option and then give you an exact lead time. Let me know if you have any other questions.

Thanks, Sam.

I recently purchased a half turn spiral kit from Salter Industries. The whole process from start to finish was great until it came time for delivery. My project was on a dead line and when I placed my order the sales agent said the turn around for this kit would be a week.Perfect I thought ,that would give me enough time to install it and finish up any loose ends of the project.I was also told that after final payment was taken it would be 24 hrs. until Irecieved my stair kit.The final payment was taken on Wed and I didnt take delivery until the following Tues. This set me back and I lost some money on the job because I had to pay a guy an extra day so I would have help with assembly. The kit itself was easy enough to put together and all the parts were there. The quality was good and in the end the homeowner was happy with it.Again my only problem, which got me really upset because of the deadline i was on was the turn around on a completly stock item.

Jason,

I’m sorry that the project was delayed due to the delivery problems. While I do not like excuses I have to believe that this must have been a communication error. Shipping lead times are completely out of our control once they leave our company. I have tracked the order on our shipping carriers website and it looks like it was shipped Thursday, Februay 19 and delivered Monday February 23. I think the confusion might have been that the stair usually ships 24 hours after the final balance, not delivered 24 hours after. Again I am sorry for the confusion, this is something we will have to be more clear on in the future. For your own information though three business days is standard transit time to Massachusetts for us.

In the end I am very pleased that both you and your customer were satisfied with the product. We pride ourselves on not only how well it assembles, but the quality craftsmanship we put into each and every stair.

Thanks for your comments. Sam

Beautiful 7′ Round Enclosure Spiral Stair…

January 12th, 2009

This stair was installed in a home in Ferndale, CA. One of our salsman, Joe Miller, worked with the customer to layout the perfect stair for this home. Here at Salter we specialize in customizing our stair to fit your needs in terms of riser height, entry/exit design, and overall creating the perfect spiral stair…

This particular spiral statistics are:

7 Foot Standard Package with 22.5 degree treads
21 Treads with our heavy duty 3/16″ steel material
63 Round 1″ Center Balusters with custom baluster tips
Continuous sleeves option which hides the center column and welds/hardware
A custom 90 degree curved platform
Powder coated Black
About 20′ of custom round well enclosure rail on top
21 Oak Treads, Oak Platform cover, and round Oak Capping for rails
2 Wooden Oak Posts at end of round rails

In this profile view from the lower level you can see how the design worked perfectly so that the exit from below walks right into the center of the room

In this picture you can see how beautiful the round rail with the oak wood capping, corner posts, and platfrom cover look together. At Salter we can create round rail for any size opening including the matching wood for any design. All our wood is handcrafted by our skilled woodworkers

This final picture is a view from the top of the spiral down. You can really appreciate the craftmanship of how well the balusters join the one piece wood handrail directly into the wood tread covers for a beautiful look with no seams, breaks, etc

Unbelievable Custom Tree House…

November 6th, 2008

More pictures from customer projects…

Greg from Gettysburg recently sent us pictures from his new tree house. As you can see for yourself below, this is certainly no ordinary tree house. One of our salesman, Paul Moser, worked with Greg to make sure that every detail was met and the stair would fit perfectly into his design.

Statistics on the Salter Spiral Stair below:

Our Steel Standard Package with a 3′ 6″ Diameter stair and15 Treads
Adjustable Sleeve with a standard square platform up top

Here is a great shot of the entire project…

This shot really shows the craftmanship that Greg put into this project. This was certainly no weekend job.

Here is a good view of the stair. As you can see our spiral stair was the perfect solution to going up the tree house and it certaily looks good doing it…

Well Greg, we at Salters’ salute you for a beautiful job. We are proud that you picked our spiral stair to compliment your project.

Spiral Stair from Colorado

October 31st, 2008

Satisfied Customer Response…

We recently received a letter from Bob in Colorado Springs, CO. He wrote a letter thanking his salesman, Tom Carlin, for his beautiful new spirtal stair. Nothing makes us happier at Salter than happy customers and beautiful spiral stairs so I wanted to share some of the pictures with everyone.

First some statistics on Bob’s Spiral Stair:

- Aluminum Diamond Pattern 6′6″ Diameter with 22.5 degree treads
- 2 Center Balusters per tread with Custom Baluster tips
- Continuous Sleeve, Powder Coated Black
- 1.5″ Aluminum Handrail, Heavy Duty 1/4″ Wall Center Column
- Plus 34.5 feet of straight rail

So now to the picutures and actual quotes from Bob:

“The staircase is really quite nice”

Notice on this stair we provided a half turn bracket that attaches to the deck versus having a platform attach to the deck. Our salesman will work with you to determine what the best option is based on your project…

“The number of details that were well thought out was a real help”

This picture gives a good overview of the railings that we built for Bob. Here at Salters we can create all the matching railing to any custom size or design. Again, a salesperson will be able to work with you to make sure that our railing is made to your exact specifications. Then our 25 years experience in the buisness will make sure that your railing is just as beautiful as your stair.

In conclusion Bob writes, “The photo doesn’t show one important detail about the deck. It faces west with a direct view of Pikes Peak and the Colorado Mountains. Your stair and rail enhance the view. Thanks”

This last quote discusses the best part about our spiral stairs. Not only are they built to the highest standards, but they are also beautiful…

If you have any comments, questions, or musings about spiral stairs write to me. Also, satisfied customers that would like to have their stair profiled on our blog send us some comments and pics or if you write your own blog I’ll put up a link…

Installation Questions

October 28th, 2008

Installation Questions,

So while working at Salter people constantly call and ask us if they can install the spiral stair themselves. The answer is YES. The catch being if you have never seen a screwdriver in real life the reality is maybe you cannot, but for the advanced do-it-yourselfer the answer is still yes.

Our spiral stairs go together so easily that you will be able to put up the entire stair in a day with the help of a friend. We send you detailed instructions with the product (to see a copy of these instructions for continuous sleeve go here: http://www.salterspiralstair.com/csinstall.htm, for adjustable sleeve go here:http://www.salterspiralstair.com/install.htm) By sending our stair unassembled we allow you the customer to be able to install the stair when you want to because all our parts can fit through a doorway. Other companies will try to sell you pre-welded stairs, but all our stairs from steel through all wood come knocked down in a box.

After all this being said you obviously can still have a contractor install your stair and finish the wood to your exact specifications, but you certainly don’t have to hire a contractor if you don’t want to.

Questions, Comments? Always feel free to ask…

Forged Iron Collection from Salter Spiral Stair

August 4th, 2008

Our home needed a spiral staircase due to space issues. After researching the web we found a kit that would work.

The kit was delivered, the instructions were complete and easy to follow. It took us about a day to assemble.

We think the finished stairs added to the beauty of our home. We purchased the stairs from Salter Spiral Stair.
